A developmental milestone is a skill most children reach by a given age — sitting unaided, first words, sorting shapes, cooperative play. Childcare programs track milestones to share progress with families and to surface possible delays early enough for referral.
Milestone tracking is observational and cumulative. Its value comes from dated notes recorded over time, not from a single assessment at conference season.
Educators observe and document; they do not diagnose. The purpose is to prompt a conversation and, where warranted, a referral.
